I’m going to be on vacation for the holidays, so the shows on my radar right now are all after the new year:

Murder City Devils, Dec 30, showbox. Old-time seattle band reformed. I saw them play at coachella and it was a great set.

Anti-Flag. Jan 21, El Corazon. Their politics are a bit cartoonish, but their pop-punk hooks are solid. I have seen them live before and they put on a great show.

Steve Earle, Jan 22, Moore theater. I’m looking forward to this because (a) his latest album of townes van zandt covers is good and (b) I have really good seats . There are a lot of examples of people moving from indy labels to the mainstream, and becoming big stars while their music becomes much less interesting, but are there any other good examples of doing the exact opposite? oh, and I have a hard time not thinking of him as the character he played on the greatest show ever on television. Here’s him playing Townes’s “Lungs”:

Jay Farrar (son volt) and Ben Gibbard (death cab for cutie), showbox, jan 24. Performing songs from their collaboration on songs inspired by Jack Kerouac’s novel Big Sur. When I saw son volt last week, they played this song from that album:

The Gourds, feb 10 tractor tavern. These guys are sooo good live. They will temporarily turn the tractor into the texas bar it wishes it was.  They’re best known for the bluegrass-ish cover of snoop dogg’s gin and juice (which, when they play it live turns into a ten minute epic medley of different covers).  Member Max Johnson (from uncle tupelo) plays every stringed instrument ever invented. If you’re somewhere else feb 10th, chances are the people at the tractor are having more fun then you are.

Scott H Biram, tractor tavern feb 12. One man blues band (guitar + foot stomping). He mostly plays heavily distorted dirty blues:

According to his web site, he survived a 75mph head on collision with an 18-wheel truck, playing a show 1 month later in a wheelchair with an iv, two broken legs, and part of his intestine missing. I believe it.

Dave Rawlings Machine (featuring Gillian Welch), showbox Feb 14. Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch headlined the no depression festival this summer and played an awesome set. The dave rawlings machine album that came out this winter is great. I was psyched to see this seattle date announced.

Justin Townes Earle, tractor tavern Feb 15. Americana music which, other than the occasional replacements cover, draws most of its inspiration from sources older than his famous father or middle-namesake. A fun and charismatic live performer. I’ve seen him a few times – at the no depression festival this summer, at a school in bothell, and opening for jason isbell. Definitely recommended.

Richard Thompson, showbox feb 15. #19 on rolling stone’s “100 greatest guitarists of all time“.

Black rebel motorcycle club, showbox market, march 5. I don’t know these guys very well, but I have the album Howl, and really like it.  My son is a big fan. Musically they have a lot in common with the Brian Jonestown Massacre, which is a not a bad thing.

Tim Barry, El Corazon, March 23. The front man from the punk group Avail has been making a series of fine acoustic solo albums for the past few years. I’m looking forward to this.

Tulisan saya yang berjudul “Haruskah Saya Harus Membenci Israel?” Dikomentari oleh saudari Ninoy dari Bandung. Komentar itu berbunyi begini, ini penggalannya;

“oh yah dan satu lagi knapa anda begitu membenci FPI?!? apakah anda tau kenapa mereka bisa dikatakan begitu arogan? karen orang/pihak yang mereka serukan untuk menjadi baik tidak memperhatikan seruan mereka, setau sayah dalam islam itu diajarkan kalo tidak bisa di beritahu secara halus yang paling maksimalnya itu adalah dengan menegur secara keras..so i think thats what FPI`s do “

Hehehe… Komentar yang baik. Saudari Ninoy melihat FPI dari sudut pandang yang berbeda (daripada pandangan pribadi saya serta pandangan lebih dari 4500 masyarakat internasional lainnya). FPI yang dimaksud dalam tulisan ini adalah Front Pembela Islam.

Yang jadi pertanyaan adalah… Apakah saya anti FPI?
Jawabannya, ternyata tidak sesimpel ya atau tidak saja. Karena Ninoy yang baik, secara terang-terangan mengatakan, bahwa dalam Islam terdapat konsep teguran berlapis. Dan FPI mengamalkan ajaran Islam dengan teguran berlapisnya itu?

Benarkah FPI mengamalkan teguran berlapisnya. Kalau sudah mentok, pakai cara yang keras?
Loh, sekeras apa?
Apa definisi teguran yang keras?
Apakah teguran yang menggunakan megaphone gituh, agar dianggap personifikasi masjid?

Setahu saya, massa FPI jarang sekali menggunakan teguran halus. Sekali-kalinya FPI menggunakan nasihat adalah ketika mereka menasihati kehidupan artis Cut memey dan Jackson Perangin-angin. Selain itu… nothing euy!

Sekali-kalinya, melihat massa FPI berbuat kebajikan dengan menolong sesama, adalah ketika massa mereka mengangkat mayat-mayat korban gempa di Aceh. Selain itu…, nothing euy! 

Pada kenyataannya, praktik-praktik FPI tidak memakai teguran yang halus dan lembut. Pada kenyataannya, mereka menyerbu, merusak, menghancurkan tempat publik. Bahkan tidak segan-segan menghakimi orang-orang yang berseberangan pendapatnya, dengan bogem mentah hingga tongkat rotan (Baca disini untuk aksi keterangan mereka).

Apakah itu kekerasan yang dimaksud?
Setahu saya yang berpengetahuan sedikit ini, sebagaimana cinta,  perbedaan pendapat adalah rahmat dan anugrah dari ilahi. Mengapa FPI harus memukul dan menyiksa warga lainnya karena mereka berbeda?
Yang nasrani, dipukul.
Yang bukan ahlussunah, dipukul.
Bahkan hingga Kyai Idris dari Cirebon pun mau dipukuli.

Apa maksudnya?

Kalau memang mereka adalah Front Pembela Islam, garis depan pejuang umat Islam di muka bumi. Maka berlakulah seperti perilaku para pejuang. Benar-benar memperjuangkan umat yang mereka bela.

Mengapa FPI  berdemo sambil merusak warung-warung pinggir jalan menentang Amerika. Mengapa mereka tidak berdemo, agar anak-anak yang belajar di madarasah-madrasah dan pesantren-pesantren Islam di seluruh Indonesia dapat memperoleh ilmu IT dan akses internet gratis?

Mengapa FPI menghancurkan seluruh buku-buku yang berisikan pemikiran ‘kiri’ bahkan menghancurkan serta memukuli tukang bukunya. Mengapa mereka tidak menulis buku mengenai Islam dalam versi mereka. Apakah jihad harus memakai pentungan dan C4… tidak boleh melalui tulisan?

Mengapa FPI ribut memusingkan goyangan Inul daripada memikirkan nasib TKW-TKW Indonesia yang digoyang-paksa, dicambuki, diperlakukan lebih buruk daripada binatang di Timur Tengah?

Mengapa FPI yang mengaku organisasi internasional, tidak melakukan konsolidasi dan lobi internasional ketika Islam dijadikan bulan-bulanan dalam agenda politik sayap kanan di Eropa dan Amerika?

Mengapa FPI lebih memilih menghancurkan majalah playboy ketimbang membuat sebuah majalah yang berdisain baik dan berisikan akhlak mulia untuk konsumsi kalangan anak muda Islam?

Mengapa FPI lebih memilih menyerbu kontes waria daripada mengadakan reshuffle yang demokratis sesuai Islam dalam organisasi mereka?

Mengapa FPI tidak banyak membantu Jogja yang mayoritas masyarakatnya adalah pemeluk Islam disaat mereka butuh bantuan ketika gempa?

Mengapa FPI lebih banyak punya pemukul rotan dan para anggota bersenjata-tajam ketimbang punya website atau para penulis blog?

Saya menulis ini dengan amat subjektif sekali. Semuanya dinilai dari kacamata saya pribadi. Tapi, kalau FPI adalah para pembela Islam mengapa kelakuan mereka tidak mirip sama sekali?

Sebagai salah seorang umat Islam (*KTP saya ada tulisan islamnya, Je. Hehe*), saya malu, nama agama saya dicatut-catut oleh preman-preman yang tidak bertanggungjawab. Dengan menggunakan jubah putih agama, preman-preman itu menganggap dirinya messias, juru selamat di muka bumi.

Bagi saya, FPI bukan hanya organisasi fasis. Menganggap diri mereka dan golongan merekalah yang paling benar di dunia ini. Namun, bagi saya, mereka juga bertindak terlalu jauh. Kadang-kadang mengatasnamakan tuhan. Dan lebih sering seperti Firaun, berlaku seperti tuhan, menghukum mereka yang ia anggap bersalah.

Okay, balik lagi ke atas. Di mana topiknya adalah, peneguran keras.
Kalau begitu… That’s what FPI’s do?

Apakah anda setuju kekerasan ala Firaun menyelesaikan masalah?

Kekerasan, apapun bentuknya, suatu saat akan melahirkan anak yang bernama kebencian.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that it will release a new Motion Controller (unofficial name) for PlayStation 3 (PS3) computer entertainment system in Spring 2010. The new controller, equipped with high-precision, highly accurate motion sensors, can deliver a whole new entertainment experience on PS3 when combined together with the PlayStation Eye camera(*1). Capable of recognizing and tracking a user’s face and voice as well as body motion, PlayStation Eye can also output the player’s image onto the TV screen. SCE will vigorously promote the expansion of this new experience only possible on the PS3 platform.

The newly announced Motion Controller is equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller’s angle and movement held in the user’s hand. Together with the PlayStation Eye camera for PS3 which can accurately track the absolute position of the controller, the controller can detect the natural and intuitive movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement on to the game. The sphere placed on the top of the controller is not only used to track the absolute position but can also give visual feedback to users by changing the colors or the illuminating patterns of the sphere. Furthermore, the new controller is also equipped with a rumble feature, familiar to the PlayStation DUALSHOCK series controller, delivering an immersive gaming experience to users.

Further expanding the new experience on PS3, SCE Worldwide Studios will deliver many exciting software titles for the Motion Controller in 2010(*2). SCE, with strong support from software developers and publishers, will deploy various measures to enhance the software title line-up for the new Motion Controller and vigorously promote the PS3 platform.

Bad weather was interfering with NASA’s attempt to launch a new, experimental rocket for the second day in a row early Wednesday.

It is August, which means it is time to begin thinking about the 2010 Super Bowl.  For marketers, this is the time to decide whether to buy advertising time or not, since developing television spots can easily take several months.

A big question: what will be the price for spots on the 2010 Super Bowl?

The price for Super Bowl advertising time has been steadily increasing.  Over the past four years the price of a 30 second spot has marched steadily up:  $2.5 million, $2.6 million, $2.7 million and, in 2009, $3 million.  Of course, these are all the published list prices; advertisers often negotiate better deals.

The pricing trend is unlikely to continue in 2010.  Indeed, I expect to see a sharp drop in the price of a spot.

There are two factors behind this.  The first factor is simple supply and demand.  The supply of Super Bowl spots will be flat; the length of a football game is not likely to change.  But demand will almost certainly be down; companies are slashing marketing budgets in a bid to protect profits in a slumping economy.  New companies, in particular, are not likely to be buying many Super Bowl spots this year.  When cash is tight, spending heavily to quickly ramp up awareness is incredibly risky for a startup.

With flat supply and weak demand, pricing should logically fall.

The second factor is perception.  Advertising on the Super Bowl makes a major statement, since everyone knows Super Bowl ads are expensive.  In a weak economy, many companies will be nervous about the signal a Super Bowl ad will send.  The U.S. auto industry, the financial services industry and the healthcare industry are all likely to be very sensitive to sending the wrong signal in a difficult economic time.

One way to shift the high-price perception on Super Bowl advertising is to dramatically cut prices.  This could make advertisers appear smart.  Perhaps the executives at GM could claim, “We are taking advantage of the new low rates to reintroduce our brands to the American public.”  Other advertisers could note, “We are spending 25% less for the same audience we reached in 2009.”

Any way you look at it, prices will almost certainly be down.

My advice to CBS: cut official prices by at least 30%, to $2.1 million per 30 seconds.
